La Libertad, El Salvador. October 6, 2020 (IICA). - Training sessions on sustainable
livestock farming continue with the Agricultural Field Schools (ECA), promoted under the framework of the project
"Support for the formulation of Appropriate Mitigation Actions in Central American Agriculture".
In the Resilient Food Production component, "Support for the formulation of Appropriate Mitigation Actions in Central American Agriculture", a project of the Euroclima+ Programme financed by the European Union, intensifies training with groups of Salvadoran livestock farmers.
The training circuit presents an intense dynamism with men and women cattle producers of the El Salvador departments: Chalatenango and Morazán.
This process is accompanied by technical assistance visits for the respective follow-up, where the people of the project take an active part and receive the necessary materials, especially in the Productive Development Centres (Spanish acronym CDP) that function as model units.
At the moment, small groups of participants are overcoming the climatic adversities of winter, excessive rainfall in particular, and the context of a pandemic, to acquire new knowledge and practices in Sustainable Agriculture Adapted to Climate (ASAC). The eastern part of the country presents the greatest challenges in this regard.
Based on learning-by-doing and applying entertaining mechanisms, the Agricultural Field Schools are, at present, periodic scenarios for developing a curriculum. In the first weeks, a topic that has required special emphasis is the introduction to Greenhouse Gases in livestock farming.
As part of the battery of contents, other topics such as grazing using the Voisin System, living fences for fodder, pasture establishment, energy and protein banks, manure management, shade trees, among other topics, will be taught.
This effort is projected to last until the first quarter of 2021. It is hoped that the Salvadoran participants, who own various types of livestock, will begin to put into practice what they have learned in the ECA.
This project is also structuring the two experimental pilot farms with field preparations that will make it possible in the short and medium term to visualise agro-silvo-pastoral and ecosystemic actions aimed at mitigating adverse effects on the environment and climate.
Developing the regional training agenda in Low Carbon Resilient Agriculture demands close coordination between Panama and El Salvador.
