The Climate Smart Agriculture Project (AFCI-PRA), as part of EUROCLIMA+'s actions, established three forest nurseries with some 60,000 plants, in conjunction with other entities, with which it will "harvest rainwater".
May 12, 2020, Honduras. The Climate-Smart Family Farming for Resilient Food Production Project (AFCI-PRA) "harvests rainwater" and contributes to Honduras' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). The Project, funded by the European Union, promotes the conservation and restoration of at least 500 hectares of forest in water recharge areas and promotes agro-forestry systems associated with coffee cultivation.
Currently, the AFCI-PRA Project and other entities have established three forest nurseries with almost 60,000 plants in Marcala and Cabañas. In partnership with Aguas de Marcala, it has a nursery with 40,000 plants that will be transplanted in water recharge areas with the support of the Water Boards, the Municipal Environmental Unit (UMA) and producer groups from the Chiflador and Guaralape sub-basins.
Similarly, in the municipality of Cabañas, work is being done on the implementation of a forest nursery of 10,000 plants in alliance with the Water and Patronage Boards. Likewise, in alliance with the municipality of Cabañas and an education centre of the municipality, a nursery of 7,000 forest plants is being developed.
Engineer Harold Dominguez of Aguas de Marcala indicated that the alliance with the AFCI-PRA project allows them to have more impact, strengthening "water harvesting", and not duplicating actions and resources.
Dominguez reported that "with the reforestation in the water recharge zone, water will be harvested by them, and we of Agua de Marcala will monitor the growth of trees and flows before planting the trees, during and when they have reached the process of life sustainability; we want to measure the flows with support from the Water Boards and the surrounding municipalities to show that planting trees helps maintain and improve the flow of water.
Context
One of the commitments of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) of Honduras is to reforest one million hectares by 2030.
The AFCI-PRA project is part of the actions of EUROCLIMA+, the European Union's flagship programme on climate change. AFCI-PRA is implemented by the Dutch Development Cooperation Service (SNV) and the Association for the Integrated Management of the Basins of La Paz and Comayagua, Honduras (ASOMAINCUPACO). Its strategic partner is the Centro Universitario Regional del Centro (CURC-UNAH) and its political counterpart is the Presidential Office for Climate Change (Clima+), Honduras.
The Project promotes resilient food production with 600 families of Lenca indigenous communities and the mestizo population, under a sustainable water resource management approach in the El Venado and Chiflador - Guaralape basins in Honduras.
About EUROCLIMA+
EUROCLIMA+ is a programme financed by the European Union to promote environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient development in 18 Latin American countries, particularly for the benefit of the most vulnerable populations. The Programme is implemented under the synergistic work of seven agencies: the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the French Development Agency (AFD), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Expertise France (EF), International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP), the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), and UN Environment.
About the projects of the EUROCLIMA+ Resilient Food Production sector
The Resilient Food Production (RFP) projects aim to strengthen capacities at local, national and regional levels to increase resilience to climate change, the carbon and water efficiency of agricultural and livestock production systems, as well as food value chains according to their sectoral commitments in the framework of NDC implementation.
RFP is a component implemented by GIZ and Expertise France.
