Recently allocated funding for seven more projects as part of its cooperation on climate change.
Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala, May 14, 2019. “Talking about resilient foods is a complex national security issue in our countries. Land is becoming less available and demand is rising; and for this reason we must look for creative models with the resilient food production projects so that their results have positive impact," stated Alfonso Alonzo, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources of Guatemala, when inaugurating the Regional Workshop on Resilient Food Production of the EUROCLIMA+ programme of the European Union, which will take place from May 14 to 17 in Antigua Guatemala.
This meeting is a starting point for the seven projects selected and it aims to: a) present the projects and foster exchanges on approaches, products, roles and opportunities for synergies; b) discuss the draft Technical Assistance Strategy for the Resilient Food Production (RFP) component and prioritise activities based on the needs of the interested countries; and c) address the integration of cross-cutting issues such as gender, monitoring and evaluation, knowledge management, communication, visibility and administrative issues.
“Through EUROCLIMA+, we are looking to promote sustainable development and resilience to climate change in Latin America, in particular by seeking to benefit the most vulnerable populations, said Beatrice Bussi, Deputy Head of Cooperation of the European Union Delegation in Guatemala."... with funds from the European Union and co-financing from the Federal Republic of Germany and from French and Spanish cooperation, we are supporting the countries and also exchanging knowledge and best practices in support of climate actions that can be expanded and replicated in the region”, concluded Bussi.
Resilient Food Production, jointly implemented by GIZ and Expertise France, is one of seven components of the EUROCLIMA+ programme and its goal is to strengthen local, national and regional capacities to increase resilience to climate change, the effectiveness of agricultural and livestock production systems with respect to carbon and water, as well as food value chains according to their sectoral commitments under the framework of the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
“In Latin America we have many people who are dedicated to the production of subsistence foods. Therefore, for there to be fundamental changes in our countries, we must go to the countryside and work with the municipalities and communities, which are our allies in this process for resilient food production, as a way to fight serious problems such as child malnutrition,” emphasised Minister Alonzo.
The regional workshop involves government officials of EUROCLIMA+ partner nations as well as representatives of the project implementing organisations and other related organisations. During four days, the 18 partner countries will be encouraged to exchange lessons learned and best practices for the implementation of NDCs in the RFP sector.
The inauguration of the event was chaired by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources of Guatemala, Alfonso Alonzo Vargas; Beatrice Bussi, Deputy Head of Cooperation of the European Union Delegation in Guatemala; Eric Sanson, First Counselor, Embassy of France in Guatemala; Michael Grewe, Head of Cooperation for the German Embassy in Guatemala; and Anja María Dahl, Director of GIZ Guatemala.
