The study is promoted by the project "Support to the formulation of Appropriate Mitigation Actions in Central American Agriculture", in various types of livestock farming.
July 29, 2020, La Libertad, El Salvador (IICA). - El Salvador will have a scientific study to determine the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions generated in different types of livestock farms, as an action of the project "Support to the formulation of Appropriate Mitigation Actions in Central American Agriculture", a project funded by the European Union through the EUROCLIMA+ programme.
The process of identification and characterisation of the sites where the measurement will take place has started in the country. Four departments: Chalatenango, San Vicente, San Miguel and Morazán will have a total of 11 survey points throughout the country.
Data will be collected in the field, through periodic monitoring of the gases: methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide, in livestock farms with stabled and semi-stabled management.
Factors to be observed include: Variations in cattle, cattle feeding, manure treatment, deworming, vaccination, changes in supplements, among others. All data will be recorded in technical monitoring logbooks.
Following the field observations, the Project will implement specialised visits with technological equipment operated by South American experts. This phase will be carried out when the country re-establishes full commercial air traffic.
The results of the study will facilitate the development of a measurement and verification protocol to determine sectoral policies and selection of recommended mitigation technologies. In addition, livestock owners will identify promising low-carbon practices to directly contribute to GHG reduction and define climate change mitigation and adaptation actions.
A similar exercise will be carried out in Panama applied to rice cultivation. The technical work in both countries will provide a baseline as part of the Low Carbon Resilient Agriculture results.
