Indigenous food sovereignty in confronting the crisis caused by the pandemic.
December 15, 2020, Guatemala, (Maya Calendar: Kab'lajuj Tz'ikin). The launch event of the project "Strengthening Indigenous Systems for Sustainable Food Production, such as Measures for Climate Change Resilience in Central America" (SIPRACC) supported by EUROCLIMA+ was held. During the event, organized by the Sotz'il Association, executor in Guatemala and the Foundation for the Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge (FCPI), co-executor in Panama, key players from both countries participated and held the keynote address "Indigenous Food Systems and the Importance of Native Species"
The activity was attended by the Secretary-General of the Central American Integration System Mr. Marco Vinicio Cerezo, Dr. Grethel Aguilar of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Mr. Ausencio Palacio, Vice-Minister of Indigenous Affairs of the Ministry of Government of Panama, Mr. Israel Torres, EUROCLIMA+ Focal Point in Panama, Mr. Fredy Antonio Chiroy Barreno, Vice-Minister of Natural Resources and EUROCLIMA+ Focal Point for Guatemala, who expressed the importance of generating coordination and synergies for the upscaling of the actions posed by the SIPRACC project, which strengthen the security and food sovereignty of indigenous peoples and also contribute to the completion of the NDC for each one of the countries.
At the close of the activity, the keynote address on "Indigenous Food Systems and the Importance of Native Species" was shared and developed by Dr. César Azurdia, who highlighted the importance of the region as a centre of origin for native agri-food species and the need for their conservation and promotion through native seeds, as an alternative for the food security of indigenous peoples and rural communities in the region.
In this video you can access the life stories of the beneficiaries of the project, from its implementation sites in indigenous communities of the municipalities of Patzún Chimaltenango, Sumpango and San Bartolomé Milpas Altas de Sacatepéquez, Livingston and El Estor de Izabal in Guatemala, as well as the Kuna Yala Comarca in Panama.
About the project
The project "Strengthening Indigenous Systems for Sustainable Food Production" aims to strengthen traditional capacities, systems and practices of farmers and fishers, Garífunas, Mayas Kaqchikel and Q'eqchi' of Guatemala and Kunas of Panama, as an alternative to the security and food sovereignty of the indigenous peoples of the region for confronting the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the effects of climate change.
