The current context - post-COVID recovery - opens up an opportunity for a green recovery in Latin American countries, pointing to a decarbonisation of the energy system.
Santiago, Chile, October 27, 2020. Within the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ 2020 Annual Meeting held on Tuesday, October 20, the project "Mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHG) and adaptation to the impacts of climate change in Latin America by strengthening energy efficiency in energy sectors in Argentina and Chile", selected as a flagship project of the Energy Efficiency component, presented the participants with the strategic lines of action drawn up for this bi-national project that forms part of EUROCLIMA+, a programme financed by the European Union and implemented by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD).
The presentation was made by Matías Vera, coordinator of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme at the Chilean Energy Sustainability Agency, and Anabella Ruiz, cooperation specialist at the National Directorate of Electricity Generation of the Argentine Secretariat of Energy.
During his speech, Vera stressed the importance of decarbonising the economy and the need to promote energy efficiency, working on training, labelling, lighting, public buildings or efficient freight transport, and highlighting how these initiatives will be promoted within the framework of the project in his country, Chile.
For her part, Ruiz referred to the benefits of energy efficiency and the importance of incorporating more women into the energy sector. Referring to her country's project with Chile, she said that she is looking for joint solutions to consolidate progress in the field of energy and that, thanks to the meetings of the work teams of both countries, an exchange of knowledge and strengthening is generated. "We hope that the project will generate valuable information for strategic sectors involved in it, and that it can then be extended to the rest of the region," Ruiz said.
The project is carried out by the Chilean Energy Sustainability Agency, the Chilean Ministry of Energy, and the Argentinean Secretariat of Energy.
Energy efficiency sector makes progress in launching its projects in the region
As part of the presentation of flagship projects in the sector, the scope of the project "Training for the certification of professionals and the accreditation of energy efficiency companies in El Salvador and Panama" was also announced.
The presentation was made by Raymundo Flores, Energy Efficiency Analyst of the Government of El Salvador, who shared some reflections on the best practices implemented in this country based on three strategic axes: socio-economic and ecological actions, economic growth, decarbonisation of the economy, and reduction of carbon dioxide (C02).
