A meeting promoted by the government of Salta (Argentina) and the EUROCLIMA+ programme analyses the importance of incorporating the gender perspective in the livestock sector in order to tackle climate change.
Salta, (Argentina) the government of the state of Salta, with the support of EUROCLIMA+, has promoted a participatory process in order to raise awareness among the main actors in the sector about the importance of taking environmental and climate change considerations into account in the exercise of their activity.
So far, 6 participatory workshops have been held, the last of which was held on September 11, using virtual media. In this case, it was a conversation focused on the subject of "Gender, livestock and climate change", which aimed to recognise the relevance of incorporating the gender perspective into public policies, in intersectoral coordination, for addressing climate change. This workshop was attended by relevant actors in the provincial livestock sector.
This workshop included two introductory presentations: one by Constanza Pelleschi from the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Production of Salta, who explained the activities being carried out to draft the Plan to Reduce Emissions from the provincial livestock sector; and another by Sara Covaleda (FIIAPP-EUROCLIMA), who highlighted EUROCLIMA+'s commitment to achieving gender equality, within the framework of the programme's gender objective and the activities being carried out to achieve it.
The main presentations were made by two gender experts: Irene Martínez Martín from the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) and Analía Villagrán from the National University of Salta (Argentina) who delved into the relationship between "women and climate change", "the fight against climate change from a gender perspective" and "the role of women in small, medium and large-scale livestock production". The framework drawn up by the experts will form the basis on which to address the challenge of incorporating the gender perspective into the mitigation plan.
After the interventions, the participants shared some experiences that are being developed in the province on gender, livestock and climate change, highlighting the progress of the project "Participatory Climate Action: Integrating the challenges of climate change in the Greater American Chaco in Argentina and Paraguay" (supported by EUROCLIMA+) which is developing a gender strategy even though it is recognised that much work remains to be done on the issue.
