Toward this end, a working group has been formed to generate recommendations based on the analysis of experiences, challenges, and best practices.
San José, August 28, 2020. The crisis generated by the COVID-19 virus represents great challenges, but also opens an opportunity for improving the resilience of societies, economies and companies. Dialogue and collaboration between the public sector, private enterprise and other key actors is crucial in seeking a convergence of agendas resulting in recovery plans and strategies that promote resilient, low-emission development.
In this context, members of the Community of Practice (CoP) on Private Sector Involvement in Climate Policy Processes have formed a new working group, which aims to generate recommendations for private sector involvement in the discussion and implementation of green recovery strategies in Latin America, based on the discussion of experiences, challenges and success stories from the region.
This CoP is a joint initiative of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme, through the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), under the framework of the line of action for articulation with the private sector, the LEDS LAC Regional Platform and the INCAE Business School’s Latin American Centre for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development. Teams made up of public and private organisations from 8 countries of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme are participating in this project.
The issue of green recovery had been addressed in May by the CoP, at a public conversation on COVID-19 and resilient, low-emission development, where opportunities for the convergence of agendas from a Private Sector perspective were discussed. Building on that discussion, members of the CoP from public and private organisations of Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru and Uruguay, united on a voluntary basis to continue working on this issue.
The first session of the group was held on August 11, facilitated by Ignacio Rebolledo, Chilean expert and member of the CoP since 2018, and Ana María Majano, coordinator of the CoP for LEDS LAC and CLACDS of the INCAE Business School. On that occasion, the participants discussed the concept of green recovery, shared their countries' experiences and the way in which the private sector is being involved. In subsequent sessions, they will analyse what the role of the private sector should be in these processes and how the spaces for dialogue and public-private collaboration can be strengthened.
The results of this work will be reflected in an executive document that will be published in November, as part of the efforts to share the learning and knowledge generated by the CoP with governments, business associations and other stakeholders in Latin America and other regions.
