In starting their second year of operation, EUROCLIMA+, LEDS LAC and the INCAE Business School are consolidating the work of the Community of
Practice (CoP) on Private Sector Engagement in Climate Policy Processes.
Costa Rica, January 17, 2020. The Community of Practice (CoP) on Private Sector Engagement in Climate Policy Processes was launched in mid-2018, with the objective of contributing to the development and consolidation of mechanisms to articulate private sector participation in climate policy formulation and implementation, with particular emphasis on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), through the exchange of experiences and best practices, joint learning and collaboration to address common challenges.
The CoP is jointly implemented by EUROCLIMA+, through the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) under the framework of the Climate Governance Component, the LEDS LAC Regional Platform and the Latin American Centre for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development (CLACDS) of the INCAE Business School.
National teams made up of representatives from government institutions and private sector organisations that are carrying out initiatives relevant to this issue in EUROCLIMA+ partner countries are participating in the CoP. During its first year of work, a series of activities designed to facilitate exchange, learning and collaboration among CoP members were organised, including two face-to-face workshops, six online exchange sessions, two webinars and the documentation of three case studies.
The first year's activities have been positively evaluated by the CoP participants. Carlos Adrianzén, representing the CELEPSA company of Peru, said that being part of the COP “has been very enriching, as I have found common ground on solutions and strategies.” Lorena Márquez, from the Climate Change Division of Uruguay's Ministry of Housing, Territorial Management and Environment, said: “[Participating in the CoP] has given me the impetus and enabled me to replicate a similar space in my context.” Other testimonies can be found in the CoP brochure.
For the second year of work, a new series of exchange and training activities is planned, as well as the development of knowledge products to disseminate the learning of the Community of Practice to a wider audience. On this occasion, teams from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay are participating in the Community.
These activities began on November 29, 2019, with an online exchange session, in which the objectives and work plan were presented, as well as details on the process of developing a map and best practices guide on private sector involvement in NDC implementation and review processes. In addition, a side event was organised for COP25 in Madrid, to share the lessons learned from the first year of the Community.
Five online exchange sessions, a face-to-face workshop, support for the formulation of private or public-private investment projects associated with NDCs, the organisation of webinars open to the public, as well as the publication of the mapping, best practices guide and other documents produced from the Community's work are scheduled for 2020.
