Representatives of the public and private sector of eight countries of Latin America and the Caribbean meet in Peru to address climate change
Lima, May 21, 2019. Representatives of the public and private sector of eight countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are meeting in Lima to exchange experiences on the measures that are being adopted in each nation to address climate change with the active participation of the private sector.
This “Second Workshop of the Community of Practice on the involvement of the private sector in climate policy processes in Latin America”, is being held from today until Thursday, May 23, in Lima, with the participation of more representatives of the European Union Delegation in Peru and 30 representatives of Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Uruguay and Peru that are part of the LEDS LAC Platform and the European Union funded EUROCLIMA+ programme.
The objective of this event is to contribute to the development and consolidation of mechanisms to incorporate the participation of the private sector in the formulation and implementation of climate policies, especially the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), through which the countries pursue their contributions to the global goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
During the inauguration, the Deputy Minister of Strategic Development of Natural Resources of the Ministry of the Environment of Peru (MINAM), Gabriel Quijandría, highlighted the role of the private sector in fulfilling the ambition of the countries in confronting climate change. “Spaces like this are fundamental to generating trust among the actors involved in managing climate change. In addition, they help us find solutions and determine how much we will contribute from our position,” said Quijandría.
For her part, the Director of Adaptation to Climate Change and Desertification of MINAM, Cristina Rodríguez, said that in Peru a key process for the institutionalisation of the NDCs has been the design and execution of the “Let’s discuss the NDCs”, which will be fundamental for the construction of a shared vision in the medium and long term regarding the incorporation of climate change in sectoral policies and at regional and local levels.
Rodriguez added that the country is committed to the objectives of the Paris Agreement, through its NDC. She added that, within this context, the participatory process known as “Lets discuss” is the Peruvian strategy to ensure this permanent interaction among the actors, “generating viable alliances and agreements, thus creating legitimacy and sustainability for public climate policy processes.”
From October 2017 to date, a total of 46 “Let’s discuss the NDCs” have been made nationally, bringing together more than 1500 actors from the public sector, business associations, companies, producers, cooperation agencies, NGOs, research centres and indigenous peoples.
