First country roundtable in Ecuador supported by Euroclima+ brings several entities together.
April 5, 2019, Quito, Ecuador. During the morning of April 5, in the city of Quito, senior officials of the state institutions that make up the Inter-institutional Committee on Climate Change (CICC) met with representatives of implementing agencies and officials of the European Union for the EUROCLIMA+ programme, to announce the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), one of the main advances that Ecuador has developed to reduce emissions and implement measures for climate change adaptation.
Alejandro Jaramillo, Vice-minister of Environment (s), stressed that this meeting “opens up the possibility of maintaining a participatory, inclusive and coordinated process among the different government institutions so that the future lines of action of the Programme respond to the highest national interests in matters of climate change.”
In this context EUROCLIMA+, a programme financed by the European Union (EU), supports 18 Latin American countries by strengthening them for the fulfilment of the commitments made under the Paris Agreement.
Catherine Ghyoot, representative of the EU, emphasised that the main areas of intervention are: strengthening climate governance, promoting access to climate funding and improving transparency and accountability for NDC implementation.
In addition, she noted that EUROCLIMA+ is funding seven specific projects in Ecuador, which focus on risk reduction and management, urban mobility and resilient food production.
For her part, Stephanie Ávalos, undersecretary of Climate Change, presented the lines of action established in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), and stressed that its formulation was developed around a participatory process, “it is important to mention that we must continue to plan how we will link more closely with the private sector and the decentralised autonomous governments, as these are core actors in meeting the goals of mitigation and adaptation to climate change, and these should become articulating axes of the country’s sustainable development,” she said.

After the meeting, a group of technicians from different State institutions, local governments and cooperation agencies met at work tables to discuss in detail the technical cooperation needs that exist in each of the sectors that are prioritised by the NDC.
