EUROCLIMA+ will prioritise climate change dialogues at the country level

18 Latin American countries will be supported in defining their climate change policy agendas with special attention to the identification of priorities for the achievement of their NDCs.

April 2, 2019. San José de Puembo, Ecuador. “EUROCLIMA +, our flagship climate change programme, is gathering us here today to jointly agree on the programming and implementation of actions for the coming years,” said Marianne Van Steen, ambassador of the European Union in Ecuador, who invited participants to prioritise activities related to compliance with Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), which each country committed to achieve with the signing of the Paris Climate Change Agreement in 2015.

This 2019, Ecuador is the host country for the EUROCLIMA+ Regional Workshop, an event that brings together more than 70 specialists from the technical and governmental areas of the 18 member countries of the Programme, as well as officials of the European Union and the United Nations.

“Today we meet to define future lines of action to ensure that we can review what we need and how we can resolve this. I am grateful for the support of the European Union. I am sure that we will have one of the most productive work days,” said Minister of Environment of Ecuador Marcelo Mata in his message.

The Minister also stressed the importance of continuing to articulate the actions of EUROCLIMA+ with other cooperation initiatives under way in Latin American countries, in order to develop synergies and enhance the impact of the Programme in the region.

During this regional workshop we will present the actions that EUROCLIMA+ proposes to carry out in order to strengthen continuous climate change dialogue processes at the national level through the mechanisms that each nation establishes in agreement with the European Union, and also between these same countries. The aim is to align cooperation actions with the needs of the countries in order to comply with national climate goals.

EUROCLIMA+ is currently implementing 41 projects and more than 55 projects should be operational by the end of the year. The prioritisation of country level dialogues is expected to complement and give continuity to activities and projects in execution.

The 2019 EUROCLIMA+ Workshop will take place April 2 to 4, at Hacienda San José de Puembo, Ecuador. Representatives from the following countries will participate: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
