The activity will serve to strengthen the Central American country's climate information systems and capacities to generate regionalized climate scenarios.
Personnel from the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) will visit El Salvador between April 17 and 21 on a mission to exchange experiences and best practices with personnel from El Salvador's Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (MARN). The objective of this activity is to strengthen the Central American country's climate information systems and capacities to generate regionalized climate scenarios.
The mission takes place within the framework of the Euroclima program, financed by the European Union and implemented by various European cooperation entities and United Nations agencies. Specifically, this activity has been coordinated and financed through the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Public Administration and Policies (FIIAPP).
During this work week, AEMET staff will share information and best practices on key issues in the field of climate information systems. The work agenda includes topics such as the organization of climate station networks, the construction and management of climate databases, the elaboration of climate data series, the calculation of normal climate conditions, and the generation of risk maps and climate scenarios.
All these elements are key to predict the evolution and behaviour of the climate and to design programs for adaptation to climate change. A good climate information system allows, among other things:Put in place early climate warning devices that allow predicting the impact of extreme weather phenomena.
- Make more informed decisions in the field of economic activities on which climatology has an important impact (mainly agriculture). This contributes both to improving the economic performance of the activity and to ensuring an extremely important common good: food security.
- To develop, on the basis of regionalized climate scenarios, specific impact and vulnerability studies and to assess the needs for adaptation to climate change in various ecological, economic and social sectors and systems.
- The agenda of the visit includes, in addition to working meetings at the MARN headquarters, on-site visits such as the one to the San Andres climate station in the department of La Libertad.
About Euroclima
