EUROCLIMA+ present at COP24

Two events on Saturday, December 8 in the morning hours.

Brussels, Belgium, November 22, 2018. 2018 has been designated a key year in moving towards compliance with the Paris Agreement and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). It is also a decisive year for increasing climate commitment ambitions and guiding the development of countries towards low-carbon and climate-resilient economies. The objective is essential: to not raise the global temperature of the planet beyond 1.5° C, responding to the recent and urgent call made by the IPCC in its Special Report: Global Warming 1.5° C.

Given this scenario, EUROCLIMA+, the European Union’s flagship programme on climate change for Latin America, will participate in COP24 with two meetings. Both events will take place on Saturday, December 8, in the morning hours.

First event: Dialogue among peers to promote the implementation of their NDCs

The EUROCLIMA+ Climate Governance component involves, among other partners, the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in alliance with LEDS LAC, the NDC Partnership and AVINA Foundation. These will be carrying out the event “Advances and challenges in NDC implementation in Latin America and the Caribbean: how to increase ambition in the region”.

In this meeting the main advances and challenges in the implementation of the NDCs in Latin America and the Caribbean will be shared. Likewise, there will be a dialogue on opportunities to increase ambition and climate action in the region, based on the experience of the countries and the agencies that provide technical support to the Latin American governments to comply with climate commitments made under framework of the Paris Agreement.

The Programme is currently working on the implementation of 19 urban mobility projects with local and national Latin American authorities, promoting electric mobility in several countries and helping to facilitate vertical national-local articulation for better climate governance.
