A delegation from the EUROCLIMA+ programme visited the country during the month of June, with the purpose of consolidating current support in the construction of its
Long-Term Climate Strategy, as well as strengthening and articulating cooperation actions with the new authorities of the country.
Tegucigalpa, 20 June 2022.- The EUROCLIMA+ programme, through the International and Ibero-America Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP) and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH is supporting Honduras in the development of its Long-Term Climate Strategy, an instrument that establishes the roadmap for the actions, strategies and transformations that the country will implement to achieve its climate objectives. In the case of Honduras, the strategy focuses both on decarbonising its economy and increasing the country's resilience to climate change.
In the framework of this action, a delegation from the programme, which included representatives from the European Delegation in Honduras and the GIZ and FIIAPP agencies, carried out a series of activities in the country, both to advance the strategy and to strengthen and coordinate cooperation actions with the new authorities.
To this end, a series of meetings were held with key actors in climate change management:
Meeting with the Vice-Minister (Lic. Malcom Stufkens) of the Secretariat of Natural Resources and Environment (MiAmbiente).
Meeting with the director of the National Directorate of Climate Change of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MiAmbiente).
Meeting with the authorities of the Central American Technological University (UNITEC).
Multi-stakeholder engagement for decarbonisation
Along with the meetings held during the visit, the first Multi-stakeholder Workshop for the construction of the National Strategy for Decarbonisation and Climate Resilience was also held, with the participation of the country's new authorities, as well as more than 50 representatives from different strategic sectors (Energy, USCUSS, Agriculture, Waste and Industrial Processes), including public, private, civil society, and academia.
In the coming months, the process of building the Long-Term Strategy will consider holding additional multi-stakeholder workshops to reflect on and define the key guidelines for the 2020-2050 roadmap.
