The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation (ACTO), the European Union and Euroclima+ meet in the first working session to formulate the work plan of the project "Creation of the Amazon Regional Platform on Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change".

Representatives of ACTO, the Delegation of the European Union in Brazil, Embassies of European Countries in Brazil and the Euroclima+ Programme of the European Union,

met in person on 23 and 24 May 2022 to coordinate actions and the work plan of the project "Creation of the Amazon Regional Platform of Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change, in the framework of ACTO", an initiative supported by AECID, ECLAC and GIZ, implementing agencies of the Euroclima+ programme.

The Platform is expected to contribute to the visibility and recognition of the role of the knowledge and practices of Amazonian indigenous peoples in climate change management, as well as to achieve the articulation between ACTO member states and indigenous peoples to promote public policies with an intercultural approach and specific references to indigenous women and youth.

At this meeting the Secretary General of ACTO, Alexandra Moreira, highlighted the importance of the incremental progress of the Platform, from the local to the regional level, favouring ownership, articulation, in situ benefits and exchange between member countries for the inclusion of indigenous peoples in public policies against climate change.

Likewise, on 24 May, in a meeting attended by the SP/ACTO authorities together with the European Union Delegation in Brazil and representatives of the diplomatic corps of the EU member countries in the same country, it was possible to identify the potential synergy of the Platform with other SP/ACTO actions, such as the Forest Programme, which promotes conservation and sustainable forest management, and the Amazon Regional Observatory (ARO), which promotes the flow of intergovernmental information from member countries, linked to the management of information on the Amazon.

For Euroclima+, supporting the ACTO Amazon Regional Platform for Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change is a key initiative for contributing to strengthening the participation and contribution of Indigenous Peoples in the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development of ACTO countries.
