Young Researchers Programme in Honduras will strengthen the local capacities of future climate change experts

The call for applications for the programme is open until Friday 8 April.

Tegucigalpa, Honduras, 4 April, 2022.  The transformation towards sustainable, resilient development in line with global climate targets requires a long-term vision that involves the various sectors and actors of society.

In this context, the strategic alliance between the European Union and Honduras through the EUROCLIMA+ programme seeks to support the development of the National Strategy for Decarbonisation and Climate Resilience of Honduras (ENDRCH) 2020-2050, which is manifested in the three components of the action: 1) Methodological design and preparation of the Strategy (led by FIIAPP); 2) Design and implementation of the participatory process and governance (led by GIZ); 3) Capacity building for long-term planning, which includes support to the Young Researchers Programme (led by GIZ).

In the framework of the third component, EUROCLIMA+ through the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH, together with the Government of Honduras and the Universidad Tecnológica Centroamericana (UNITEC), is developing the Young Researchers Programme for the National Strategy for Decarbonisation and Climate Resilience (LTS) of Honduras. The Programme's main objective is to strengthen the local capacities of future sectoral experts on climate change in Honduras by promoting complementary research in the 6 key economic sectors of decarbonisation: Energy, Transport, Cities and Industries, Waste, Agriculture and Livestock, Forests.

In addition, scientific research will be conducted in the context of Honduras under a long-term perspective and with a measurable GHG emissions mitigation component. They will also analyse the implications of the proposed solutions in the sustainability framework under the three pillars of the country's decarbonisation: 1. Socioeconomic Development, 2. Subnational Implementation and 3. Just Transition.

The programme is aimed at researchers between 18 and 30 years of age, with Honduran nationality, who meet the following profile:

  1. Have analytical and synthesis skills on technical issues related to decarbonisation.
  2. Commit to active participation for ten (10) hours per week.
  3. Be fully committed to participating enthusiastically and constructively in all Young Investigator sessions.
  4. Present significant advances in the research.
  5. Have demonstrated knowledge of Climate Change issues (speaker or organiser, reviewer)
  6. Have participated in research topics (author, assistant, reviewer)

The detailed requirements and participation mechanism are available here

The call for the submission of proposals is open until 8 April.

It is important to mention that these research projects will be fundamental for the National Strategy for Decarbonisation and Climate Resilience of Honduras 2020 - 2050, seeking to achieve climate neutrality in one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change worldwide. In this regard, the Strategy will be an instrument that will define the objectives and guidelines that the country will follow for the next 30 years to enable the transition to a low-carbon and more resilient development to the impacts of climate change.
