With the announcement of a series of projects in the north and in the far south, Chile is moving forward on its goal to position itself as a leading country in the production of green hydrogen worldwide.
This is why on 19 January 2022, Corfo will hold the fourth version of the Green Hydrogen Summit, a meeting supported by ECLAC and the GIZ Renewable Energy Programme, and financed by the European Union through its Euroclima+ climate action programme. The event is expected to bring together thousands of people virtually around the development of green hydrogen initiatives in Chile and Latin America.
"Chile, thanks to its advantages in renewable energy generation, with the highest solar radiation in the world and an excellent wind resource, is one of the countries that stands out for its potential to produce and export green hydrogen worldwide, which will reduce costs as happened with the photovoltaic industry. This meeting will be a unique opportunity to position Chile as a leading country in the development of this industry, which will be key to moving towards sustainable recovery, creating jobs and improving the quality of life of thousands of people and communities in the country and the rest of the world," said Pablo Terrazas, executive vice president of Corfo.
According to estimates by the Ministry of Energy, Chile should reach at least 25 GW of green hydrogen production by 2030. This new version of the Green Hydrogen Summit 2022 will address topics such as the situation of local markets in the face of the irruption of green hydrogen, and the technological challenges facing the implementation of energy projects in the countries. In addition, presentations will be made from Antofagasta and Magallanes, regions defined as exceptional for the development of this energy source, where the opportunities of the so-called "fuel of the future" will be analysed in key industries for Chile such as mining and ports, the latter being of great relevance due to its role in the storage and transport of this new energy source.
Another new feature of the meeting will be the panel dedicated to the structural change that Latin America is undergoing in energy matters, in which green hydrogen will play a key role. "In this international conference we will address in a concrete way the needs of our Latin American region to enable the adoption of new energy technologies such as green hydrogen," said Joseluis Samaniego, director of ECLAC's Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division.
The Green Hydrogen Summit 2022 takes place in the framework of the Chile - European Union alliance to promote climate action, both in Chile and in Latin America and the Caribbean, through its EUROCLIMA+ programme. The European Union and its Member States are working to promote the development of Green Hydrogen in Chile, through collaboration to attract investment for project development, strengthening R&D, human capital development and trade cooperation.
It also has the support of the Ministry of Energy, Environment and Science, the Chilean Hydrogen Association - H2 Chile - and Prochile. Those interested in participating can review the full programme at https://www.greenh2summitchile.cl/ and registration is free of charge. There will also be meetings in the regions of Antofagasta and Magallanes.
About EUROCLIMA+
EUROCLIMA+ is a programme funded by the European Union and co-financed by the German federal government through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), as well as by the governments of France and Spain through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
The Programme's mission is to reduce the impact of climate change and its effects in 18 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, promoting mitigation, adaptation, resilience and climate investment. It is implemented according to the "Spirit of Team Europe" under the synergistic work of seven agencies: the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the French Development Agency (AFD), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Expertise France (EF), the International and Ibero-America Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP), the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH, and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
