Parallel events for EUROCLIMA+ in the Climate Week of Latin America and the Caribbean 2018, hosted by Uruguay’s Ministry of Housing, Territorial Planning and Environment.
Brussels, August 17, 2018. Promoting actions that foster compliance with the commitments made in the Paris Agreement is one of the strategic activities being promoted by EUROCLIMA+, the flagship programme of the European Union in Latin America focused on the issue of change climate.
In order to present how the Programme is promoting these actions and discuss progress on the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), EUROCLIMA+ has co-organized the following events during Climate Week for Latin America and the Caribbean 2018, which will take place in Montevideo, Uruguay, from August 20 to 23:
- August 20. 08:00h – 12:30h. "Implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the EUROCLIMA+ Programme." Co-organized by ECLAC. See the Agenda. See the press release
- August 22. 13:00h – 14:00h. "EUROCLIMA+ in action: supporting the climate commitments of Latin America." In this session, some projects will be presented that are being developed within the Programme framework. See the Agenda.
"EUROCLIMA+ finances and technically assists the execution of significant projects and supports actions linked to climate governance," said Horst Pilger, Head of the General Directorate of International Cooperation and Development of the European Union. "A meeting like Climate Week allows us to share the actions that are underway, enhance synergies and encourage strategic alliances in the fight against climate change," he said.
In addition, during the August 22 session, the official presentation of the agreement will be made: "Generating awareness in the Spanish-speaking public about climate change, climate action and the Paris Agreement", a proposal for collaboration between EUROCLIMA+ and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that will give continuity for two more years to the UNFCCC website in Spanish and facilitate the dissemination of news to the Spanish-speaking public.
This official presentation was attended by the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Patricia Espinosa, the Ambassador of the European Union in Uruguay Karl Otto König and the Director of Climate Change of the Ministry of Housing, Territorial Planning and Environment of Uruguay Ignacio Lorenzo.
As part of the presentations that will be given by delegates of the European Union, EUROCLIMA+ also invited to the August 21 plenary session at 9:30 am organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) with the participation of Ismo Ulvila, the General Directorate of Climate of the European Commission will present the key points of the development and implementation of climate regulation in the European Union.
EUROCLIMA+ is a programme that is strengthened with the participation of the following implementing agencies: Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECID), French Development Agency (AFD), Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC), French Agency for International Technical Cooperation (Expertise France), International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and UN Environment. Since 2016, the European Union has allocated a total of 88 million euros for EUROCLIMA+, and more resources are planned for 2019.
Climate Week for Latin America and the Caribbean 2018, is hosted by Uruguay’s Ministry of Housing, Territorial Planning and Environment (MVOTMA).
