On 20 August, the second planning workshop was held for the action "Support to the structuring of mechanisms for a sustainable development industrial strategy in Brazil", which is jointly implemented by GIZ and FIIAPP in coordination with the Brazilian Ministry of Economy (ME).
This workshop was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Economy (ME), the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), the European Union Delegation (EUD) in Brazil, the European Commission through the DG CLIMA division, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and priority sector actors (Cement, Steel, Chemicals), in addition to the two implementing agencies of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme, previously mentioned.
The workshop was an opportunity to initiate discussions with the above-mentioned sectors that will be directly involved in the development of the action. Welcoming remarks were made by the Deputy Secretary of the ME Pedro Reckziegel, Stefan Agne EUD Cooperation Officer in Brazil, and Davi Bontempo, Executive Director for Environment and Sustainability of the CNI. The ME took the opportunity to reiterate the strategic nature of the action being planned and the need to support the industrial sector towards a sustainable transition.
This event was also the occasion to present the European Green Pact in more detail thanks to a presentation by Pilar Blanco Rodriguez (EUD Brazil) followed by the presentation of the FIT-55 2030 target to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, by Marcos Gonzalez Alvarez, sector manager - free allocation to industry. The objective was to present the different mechanisms developed by the EU to boost the implementation of the Green Pact and to support the transition of the industrial sector in particular.
Key issues such as Just Transition, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), innovation to ensure more sustainable production, and the circular economy, among others, were discussed. One of the main axes of this action will be to promote exchanges of experiences between the EU and Brazil through partnerships or working groups between institutions and the private sector.
The inputs received during this workshop will allow finalising of the planning phase and initiate the implementation together with the sectors and the Ministry of Economy.
