Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week 2018

Brussels, Belgium, July 11, 2018. EUROCLIMA+ will participate in Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week (LACCW 2018), focused on climate finance, climate action opportunities for cities and sustainable transport. The event, organized by the government of Uruguay together with an international consortium that includes EUROCLIMA+, will be held from August 20 to 23 in Montevideo (Uruguay).

The event will serve to demonstrate the region's support for global climate action and to mobilize new actors. EUROCLIMA+ will be present to promote initiatives that foster the fulfilment of the country commitments to the Paris Agreement. Some of the projects that are being executed in the areas of urban mobility, disaster risk reduction, forests, biodiversity and ecosystems, and climate governance will be presented.

The main theme of LACCW2018 is: Climate Action for Sustainable Development: Promoting Changes in Latin America and the Caribbean. On Wednesday, August 22 there will be a high-level meeting that will bring together personalities from the sector and it will focus on topics such as: visions to promote the expansion and implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), challenges and opportunities for cities in the Latin American and the Caribbean region, the role of transport in sustainable development, international funding for the fight against climate change.

The event also includes the Latin American Carbon Forum, and a technical session on the intersections between markets and the Sustainable Development Goals. LACCW2018 will also host a “Talanoa dialogue” at the regional level where strategies to accelerate action against climate change will be explored, including the readjustment of the region's financial flows in line with low carbon emissions development and resilience to climate change to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

Today the full agenda of the event has been announced, marking the path toward the World Climate Action Summit in San Francisco and New York Climate Week, both in September. In addition, LACCW2018 is part of a series of regional events such as Climate Week in Africa, which took place in Nairobi (Kenya) in April 2018, and Asia-Pacific Climate Week that takes place this week in Singapore.
