Spain, 31 May 2018. From 28 May 28 to 1 June, within the framework of the Climate Governance component of the EUROCLIMA+ programme, officials from the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) visited Brazil’s National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).
The objective of this activity is to strengthen knowledge and technical capacities for the promotion and concession of green patents in Brazil, as a mechanism to respond to the commitments acquired through the Paris Agreement. Likewise, the needs of the INPI will be identified to align them with the international agenda for climate change adaptation and mitigation.
The EUROCLIMA+ programme aims to promote environmentally sustainable development in 18 Latin American countries, particularly for the benefit of the most vulnerable populations. EUROCLIMA+ also provides technical and financial support for the development and application of adaptation and mitigation policies for confronting climate change. FIIAPP (International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies) is a Spanish public institution that is part of this Regional Program.
In the course of the activity, the experts, accompanied by the Patent Director, debated the design of a plan that promotes green patents in Brazil. The idea is to do so by training examiners and outreach to relevant actors of the Brazilian government, so that industrial property contributes to the commitments on climate change.
The OEPM is an autonomous Spanish agency that receives, studies and awards the different types of Industrial Property that are granted in Spain, promoting technological and economic development.
INPI is a Brazilian public agency whose mission is to execute, at the national level, the standards that regulate Industrial Property. It is responsible for trademark registration, patent concessions, industrial design, technology transfer, cartography, software and topography of integrated circuits.
