EUROCLIMA+ supports the Indigenous Peoples' Platform to face Climate Change in Peru, which contributes with its ancestral knowledge and practices.
On Thursday, February 10, the event to launch the process of updating Peru's National Climate Change Strategy 2050 was held. This event brought together various representatives of society and was attended by Melania Canales, president of the National Organisation of Andean and Amazonian Indigenous Women of Peru (Onamiap) and member of the Platform of Indigenous Peoples for confronting Climate Change.
The participation of the indigenous representative took place on the panel entitled: Towards the participatory construction of the Peru we want in 2050. This panel also consisted of representatives of international cooperation, academia, youth, civil society and the private sector.
As part of her intervention, Melania Canales reaffirmed the fundamental role of indigenous and native peoples as protectors of water and forests, and in the conservation of the Andes and the Amazon.
"We have shown over the centuries that the way we have related to and cared for Mother Nature, Pachamama, has ensured that the human species has not disappeared and that we still enjoy Mother Earth today.”
In this regard, she stressed the need to include the contributions of indigenous peoples and women for the updating of Peru's National Climate Change Strategy 2050 in the proposals for mitigation and adaptation actions to be achieved from the platform.
"The National Climate Change Strategy must take into account the contribution of indigenous peoples and women, to understand the territory in way that is territorial and independent from human beings. Where the headwaters of watersheds and forests are protected by all, thinking above all of future generations.”
Finally, Rosa Morales, General Director of Climate Change and Desertification of the Peruvian Ministry of Environment, who moderated the panel, pointed out that the actions and proposals of indigenous and native peoples are crucial to achieving the country's long-term climate goals.
The EUROCLIMA+ programme, through the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP), supports the creation of this space for the exchange of knowledge, under the framework of its Gender and Vulnerable Groups action line.
