A citizens’ meeting to connect with one another, learn, and participate around the challenges of climate change.
Santiago de Chile, December 9-11, 2020.- The Ministry of the Environment of Chile with support from the EUROCLIMA+ programme, through the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP),and the (Inter-American Development Bank (IDB),with the support of the React for the Climate platform and the FIIS, Festival of Social Innovation in Chile ,held the first Action Meetings for Climate Empowerment, through social innovation workshops that will generate inputs for the development of the Strategy for Capacity Development and Climate Empowerment of Chile
These workshops are part of a broader participatory process that will lead us to the holding of regional workshops from January 5 to 21, 2021, where we hope to collect more contributions to the strategy, and to a series of workshops with specific actors that will take place in March 2021, where this process will be completed to proceed with the systematization and design of the strategy.
Climate Empowerment Action (ACE) is the name agreed for article 6 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, reflected in article 12 of the Paris Agreement, which includes six interdependent and interrelated dimensions: education, training, public awareness, public participation, public access to information and international cooperation.
ACE is a cross-cutting public policy proposal that aims to build and articulate capacities and commitments that drive transformative action for confronting climate change, with the depth and urgency that this challenge requires. To the extent that it also envisages participation as one of its articulating dimensions, it requires governments to incorporate all actors into deliberative processes related to the approach to Climate Change. In this situation, these meetings serve to highlight the importance of citizen participation and collaboration between civil society and the Ministry of the Environment in Chile for the proposal of contributions and inputs to the strategy, and specifically on ACE in the region.
The workshops featured the presentation by Griffen Hope, who highlighted the current systemic situation regarding climate change, the relevance of committing ourselves to changes through participation and care of the environment. Participants included people from different areas of the public sector, focal points, regional and municipal governments, universities, innovative climate actions, NGOs and associations committed to climate change adaptation and mitigation. During the workdays, it was possible to learn about different initiatives underway in Chile, emphasizing how we can contribute to reducing the impact of climate change and what is needed to advance citizen empowerment on these issues.
The ideas and reflections shared addressed topics related to the importance of education as a fundamental tool of transformation and social awareness; the connection between various initiatives to create a network at regional, national and international levels, and of course, the need to include all these elements in the strategy.
