Reforestation of water recharge areas, for a recovery

13.5 hectares are reforested thanks to support from EUROCLIMA+ to the Agua Urban Waters in the Marqués Valley project.

9 July 2021. San Pedro Sacatepéquez, Guatemala. With the delivery of 10,000 species of cypress and 5,000 alder plants, the Urban Waters in the Marqués Valley project of the EUROCLIMA+ Urban Water sector contributed to the reforestation of 13.5 hectares of the water recharge zone located in the upper part of the Naranjo River Basin, by supporting private landowners in the area.

In this activity, 160 beneficiaries of the Rural Development Learning Centres -CADER- from the village of Santa Teresa in the municipality of San Pedro Sacatepéquez, in Guatemala, participated in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food -MAGA-, the National Forest Institute -INAB- and the Department of Protected Areas of San Pedro Sacatepéquez municipality.

Alder and cypress plants were selected because they are species that are adapted to the climatic conditions of the area. During the activity, the 160 beneficiaries committed themselves to give sound management to the plants, while the representatives of the institutions, for their part, will be in charge of providing accompaniment and technical assistance in this process.

The Urban Waters in the Marqués Valley project aims at the protection, integrated and sustainable management of water in the urban headwaters of the municipalities of San Pedro Sacatepéquez, San Marcos, San Antonio Sacatepéquez, San Cristóbal Cucho and Esquipulas Palo Gordo in the department of San Marcos, Guatemala. It is part of the Water Management from an Urban Resilience Perspective sector of EUROCLIMA+, which is implemented by the Spanish Agency for Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD). The project is implemented by HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation Guatemala and the Municipal Governments of the 5 beneficiary municipalities.
