This project of the Urban Water sector of EUROCLIMA+, aims for the protection, integrated and sustainable management of water in the urban headwaters of the municipalities of San Pedro Sacatepéquez, San Marcos, San Antonio Sacatepéquez, San Cristóbal Cucho and Esquipulas Palo Gordo in the department of San Marcos, Guatemala.
January 26, 2021. San Marcos, Guatemala. Representatives of Spanish Cooperation in Guatemala (AECID) and HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation, in the company of the mayors of the municipalities of San Pedro Sacatepéquez, San Marcos, San Antonio Sacatepéquez, San Cristóbal Cucho, Esquipulas Palo Gordo and the governor of the department of San Marcos, carried out the official launch of the project "Urban Waters in the Marquense Valley", of the Urban Water sector of EUROCLIMA+.
This project will help women, men, girls, boys, and future generations of urban areas in beneficiary communities to have sufficient, healthy, acceptable, physically accessible, and affordable water for their personal and domestic use; in financially, institutionally and environmentally sustainable manners.
In addition, it will contribute to a better resilience to climate change of the urban water and drainage systems of the aforementioned municipalities, and the better efficiency, continuity and quality of water service.
The mayor of San Marcos, Willy Juárez, stressed that: "This project arises not only to improve and increase the quantity and quality of water, it will also assume and work on the integrated management of water, with the reforestation and water conservation of the five municipalities of the Marquense valley".
The initiative is part of the Water Management sector with an Urban Resilience Perspective of the EUROCLIMA+ programme, which is implemented by the Spanish Agency for Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD). The project is led by HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation Guatemala and the Municipal Governments of the 5 beneficiary municipalities. The total investment is 1,499,937 Euros and its implementation is planned for a period of three years.
Finally, the mayor of San Pedro Sacatepéquez, Juan Eliezer González, referred to "the opportunity generated by the project to raise awareness of the importance of payment for water service and reducing delinquent payments ".
