22 local leaders from Abancay and the surrounding area received training to contribute and propose changes that will further strengthen integrated water management in the Mariño basin,
tackling the effects of climate change, with the support of EUROCLIMA's Water for Abancay project.
30 March 2022. Abancay, Peru. The Water for Abancay and Communities project of the EUROCLIMA+ Urban Water sector, implemented by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), organised a training programme for leaders on integrated water resources management (IWRM) in the context of climate change, which includes five training modules, an internship and a fair about IWRM.
This programme seeks to promote changes aimed at integrated water management for adaptation to climate change in the Mariño basin, through the contributions of local leaders trained and involved in the development of their territory. In addition, the programme has the following objectives:
- To train community leaders capable of implementing IWRM proposals in different areas of watershed management (water sources, water use systems and the basin).
- To strengthen local capacities to promote desirable performances in climate risk management and water adaptation.
- To build individuals/groups with the capacity to promote ecosystem-based adaptation.
- To create spaces for debate on environmental governance in the Mariño basin.
There are currently 22 local leaders (12 women and 10 men) from the communities of Micaela Bastidas, Ayaorcco, Asillo, Llañucancha and irrigation users from Quitasol, Trujipata Baja, Imponeda, Carmen San Lázaro-Pachachachaca Baja and Paltaypata, who are benefiting from this programme.
The five modules address a variety of topics related to integrated water resources management:
Module 1: Environmental Governance
Module 2: Adaptation to climate change
Module 3: Community Management of disaster risks
Module 4: IWRM diagnosis in watersheds
Module 5: Development planning with an IWRM approach.
The programme, which started in October 2021, will end on 11 May 2022, with internships scheduled for April 2022.
