June 2023. Montevideo, Uruguay. Children from different schools in Uruguay were awarded prizes for their creativity and artistic ability in the "Be the change" contest, organized by the EUROCLIMA Urban Water 'Adaptation in Action - Santa Lucia Basin' project of EUROCLIMA, and the Ministry of Environment of Uruguay. The awards were presented at the Sustainable Uruguay Expo in Montevideo by the Uruguayan Minister of the Environment, Robert Bouvier, and the National Water Director, Viviana Pesce.
The contest called on children from all the country's schools to make visible, through art and creativity, the daily practices that we can all adopt to contribute to saving natural resources.
As part of these activities and under the slogan "Safe water for your family," a workshop was also held for schools in Uruguay on the protection of wells supplying water for human consumption. Through playful activities, children were taught about topics such as the water cycle and the availability of the resource, the protection of groundwater for supplying localities and raising awareness of its importance to "make the invisible visible".
The second edition of the Sustainable Uruguay Expo, organized by the Ministry of the Environment, took place at the Antel Arena in Montevideo between June 8 and 11 with a total attendance of more than 20,000 people. The event promoted sustainable development, environmental care and awareness, and citizen commitment, in a space for the exchange of experiences and good practices.
The fair was divided into six sectors: a sustainable promenade with 200 stands, of which more than 100 were occupied by enterprises and civil society organizations; 30 workshops for educational centres and families, and more than 200 panellists who gave talks during the four days.
About Adaptation in Action - Santa Lucia Basin
The "Adaptation in Action - Santa Lucía Basin" project aims to strengthen the resilience of Montevideo and its metropolitan area, as well as that of the urban localities of the Santa Lucía River basin to the impacts of climate variability and change, focusing efforts on integrated management of water resources to guarantee the quantity and quality of their source of drinking water. This project is led by the National Water Directorate (Dinagua) of the Ministry of Environment and is financed by the European Union (EU) through the Euroclima+ program, which delegates funds to the implementing agencies: the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).
