Local actors in Peru committed to the formulation of disaster risk prevention plans will plant 30,000 seedlings for reforestation to prevent soil degradation.

Under the framework of the project "Risk Management without Borders" that the European Union has been implementing through the Euroclima Plus programme in the border territory of Peru and Ecuador, several institutional strengthening and capacity building actions have been developed, where local authorities and actors have assumed commitments in the formulation of disaster risk prevention and reduction plans against droughts and floods in the districts located in the Catamayo-Chira Basin in the Piura región in Peruvian territory.
Important advances have been made in all districts, and regarding this, Karina Huamán García, regional manager of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, points out that “the regional policy in this process that has begun with the help of international cooperation is aligned with national policy and respecting the millennium goals, in the fight against climate change and environmental stewardship. We are working together with local authorities and leaders who are committed and motivated to participate".
In the Montero district, Ayabaca province in Peruvian territory, as a strategy to reduce environmental problems and address the effects of climate change, the residents of the villages of Pichandur, Pite Buenos Aires, Nogal, San Francisco, and Buenos Aires in the communities of Marmas, La Palma, Sicacate and Santa Rosa de Chonta, received 30,000 agroforestry seedlings for reforestation in their jurisdiction.
The mayoral district of Carlos Sanchez recognised the cooperation support from the European Union, which allows Latin American countries to give importance to reforestation in the area of watersheds that help control various factors to reduce the risks of natural disasters, such as drought, deforestation, and flooding. Likewise, the representative of the communities, inhabitant José Marchan, exhorted other inhabitants to get involved in the reforestation work since it allows improvement in the living conditions of the rural population.
The project is co-executed by the Regional Government of Piura, the Provincial Government of Loja and the National Risk and Emergency Management Service of Ecuador, financed by the European Union under the Euroclima+ Programme, a Risk Management component implemented by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Agency for Development - AFD.
