- Priority actions were identified to contribute to reducing gender inequality and agroclimatic risk.
May 18, 2023. 73 Bolivian women from the municipalities of Carapari and Villamontes in the department of Tarija, received training on agroclimatic risk management with a gender perspective.
This initiative was part of the "Droughts and Floods-Andes" project implemented within the framework of the Euroclima Program financed by the European Union and executed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD)
As part of the initiative, a space for collective reflection was created to understand the relevance of gender equity in agriculture, the inequality gaps between men and women, and their relationship with differentiated capacities and impacts in disaster situations.
The training workshops addressed topics such as gender identity, gender stereotypes, sexual division of labour, gender equity, care work, violence, risk management and agro-climatic disasters, gender vulnerability, rights and legal support frameworks, and the gender approach in public policy.
The participants shared their own daily experiences, talking about the reproductive, productive and community tasks performed by women, and based on this, the problems and possible solutions were analysed.
Priority work actions
As a result of this collaborative work, the participants identified priority actions to advance in the reduction of factors that generate vulnerability and contribute to the reduction of gender inequality and agro-climatic risk. Some of them are the following:
- Training and capacity building for women community leaders.
- Consolidation of an organization of women farmers as a space for coordination, mutual learning, and political advocacy.
- Capacity building for municipal technicians to consider gender equity in projects, plans and policies aimed at agroclimatic risk and disaster management.
- Formulation of an agro-environmental risk and disaster management strategy with a gender perspective.
The results obtained from these training workshops constitute an important basis for the generation of response strategies to a complex reality that aims to advance in the consolidation of an inclusive and resilient agriculture, and with it the reduction of the impacts generated in agroclimatic risk situations.
Based on this collective reading of reality, the women were able to identify priority and strategic actions to improve their situation and living conditions, to respond to a context that requires a differentiated approach to building more resilient communities.
