Three of the EUROCLIMA+ projects for the Risk Management component will be presented at the XV meeting of CIMHET
March 14, 2019, Montevideo Uruguay. The 15th meeting of the Conference of Directors of the Ibero-American Meteorological and Hydrological Services (CIMHET) will take place from March 13 to 15. Most of the Ibero-American meteorological and hydrological services have participated in this event.
On the second day of the activity, three of the projects financed with European Union resources for the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management component of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme were presented.
Victor Navalpotro, General Coordinator of Spanish Cooperation for Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay, presented the context of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme and Juan Enrique García, Programme Manager in the Technical Office of Spanish Cooperation in Costa Rica, through a remote connection from Costa Rica, presented the results of the call for proposals for the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management component, commenting on the number of projects selected and their characteristics. He also stressed the importance of supporting the countries of Latin America in their efforts in the fight against climate change, “the strategic approach of the approved projects will enable actions in 17 of the 18 countries that the Euroclima+ programme benefits, which constitutes an effort to meet the demand of the region.”
Afterward, the representatives of the leading institutions presented the main actions of their projects.
Berta Olmedo of CRRH (Regional Water Resource Committees) presented the general lines of implementation of the Capacity Building Project for the Reduction of Risk from Flood and Drought Disasters and the Promotion of Resilience in Central America, and she pointed out that the way in which this intervention has been proposed is producing many expectations in the Central American institutional framework.
For his part, Rodney Martínez from CIIFEN (International Research Centre on El Niño), presented the project Strengthening national and regional systems for monitoring and managing risks of drought and floods in a context of climate change and desertification in the Andean countries. Martinez reiterated the need to identify complementarity with the other projects that are being implemented to reduce the countries' asymmetry and strengthen joint actions.
Finally, Celeste Saulo of the National Metrological Service of Argentina presented the project Design and initial implementation of a drought information system (monitoring, prediction, preparation and impact mitigation) for southern South America, and reiterated the importance of taking on the great challenge of articulating actions among all the other projects.
