On 16 June, a cooperation agreement was signed for the implementation of the Early Warning System (EWS) for floods in Peru
under the framework of the Euroclima+ project Droughts and Floods -Andes.
18 June 2021. Quito, Ecuador. CIIFEN and the Mayor's Office of the District of Uchumayo in Peru, signed a cooperation agreement for the Implementation of the Early Warning System (EWS) against floods, with the assistance of the Mayor of Uchumayo, Econ. Víctor Quispe Velásquez, and the International Director of CIIFEN, Juan José Nieto Lopez during the session of the Civil Defence Platform of the Municipality of Uchumayo.
This agreement is part of the project "Strengthening national and regional monitoring and risk management systems" implemented by the International Centre for El Niño Research (CIIFEN) in the Camaná and Chilli basins for the Arequipa region in Peru as part of the Euroclima+ Programme financed by the European Union and executed by the Spanish Agency for Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD).
Following the signing of this agreement, a working session was held, chaired by the architect Jessica Gonzales, to set up the flood response committee, which will include the participation of institutions linked to Risk Management in the district of Uchumayo, as well as civil society and academia.
About the sector Disaster Risk Management: droughts and floods
The sector "Disaster risk management and reduction: droughts and floods" aims for the adoption of disaster risk management and reduction plans by national governments in Latin America to promote the integrated management of flood and drought risks in the context of climate change, taking as a reference the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 and the commitments adopted by the countries in their fight against climate change.
