The project Risk Management without Borders of EUROCLIMA+ signed a letter of commitment with authorities of the Agricultural sector in Loja and Piura for risk reduction with climate change actions for mitigation and adaptation.

January 11, 2020, city of Piura, Peru and city of Loja, Ecuador. The EUROCLIMA+ Programme through the binational project "Risk Management Without Borders", signed a letter of commitment on Friday, January 8 with authorities of the District Directorate 11D01 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock -MAG of Loja, Ecuador and the Regional Directorate of Agriculture of Piura, Peru, with the aim of facilitating the process of articulation and inter-agency cooperation for risk reduction with mitigation and adaptation actions to climate change in the project’s areas of intervention.

This commitment was signed under the framework of one of the project components, such as the strengthening of vulnerable communities, preparing them for the reduction of risks from natural events such as droughts and floods, which put at risk the means of production, the population, and therefore Food Security.

It will benefit 230,000 villagers from 17 districts in the Piura region of northern Peru and 10 cantons and parishes in the province of Loja in southern Ecuador; and it aims to implement mitigation and adaptation measures to contribute to the promotion of Family Farming Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, while also reducing vulnerability to the negative impacts of Climate Change.

Prior to this binational protocol act, several technical coordination meetings were held with the technical and management staff of the District Directorate 11D01 of the MAG and Regional Directorate of Agriculture Piura, in order to promote and operate actions of institutional strengthening and exchange of experiences that will be developed in favour of the border communities of Ecuador and Peru.

The signing of the letter of commitment was done today through a virtual protocol act, with the participation of the Prefecta in charge of the Province of Loja, Mr. María José Coronel, who gave the words of welcome, Mr. Luigi Giancarlo Ruiz Quiroga -Regional Director of Agriculture of Piura, who expressed the institutional greeting, Dr. Felíx Paladines -District 11D01 Director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and the Binational Director of PGRSF , Eng. Fredy Feijó Uday, accompanied by the technical team of Peru and Ecuador.

The project is co-implemented by the Regional Piura Government and the Provincial Prefecture of Loja, funded by the European Union through the EUROCLIMA+ programme and implemented by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD) in partnership with France's Meurthe et Moselle department, L'observatoire des changements in Amérique Latine (Local) , Departement L'Aude France and the Province of Viterbo.
