The Regional Community of Practice of MobiliseYourCity presented the advantages of urban mobility in sustainable cities.
Costa Rica, October 14. –Last Monday, October 7, in the context of PreCOP25 satellite activities, a Regional Workshop was held in preparation for the Municipal Authorities for Climate Action Summit, an activity that focuses on Latin American climate policy for the Conference of the Parties for Climate Change —better known as COP 25—, to be held in Chile in December 2019.
The workshop, organised by the Latin American Federation of Cities, Municipalities and Local Government Associations (FLACMA), the National Union of Local Governments (UNGL), the Institute for Municipal Development and Advising (IFAM), and the Municipality of San José, was inaugurated by Claudia Dobles, First Lady of Costa Rica; Johnny Araya, co-president of FLACMA and mayor of the Municipality of San José; and Juan Pablo Barquero, president of UNGL and mayor of Tilarán.
The following topics were highlighted: Climate Action Projects and their financing, Sustainable Cities through Urban Mobility, Climate Agenda, Strategic Vision for the Sustainable Development of Territories, Common Vision for Climate Change from the local governments of Latin America, among many others.
As part of the workshop activities, the Regional Community of Practice for the MobiliseYourCity Sustainable Urban Mobility Platform organised the session "Leading the Way to Sustainable Cities through Urban Mobility". In this session, Roberto Canessa of the EUROCLIMA+ Secretariat, presented the programme, while Ana Ureña, representing GIZ, spoke about the work of the EUROCLIMA+ Urban Mobility component.
Two projects receiving financial support from the EUROCLIMA+ programme were also presented. Alicia Borja Rodríguez, mayor of Curridabat, spoke about the project Promotion and Development of Urban Cycling, which aims to improve non-motorised mobility conditions between Curridabat and Montes de Oca, two municipalities in Costa Rica, through new cycle-infrastructure.
For his part, Wilmar Hernando Gómez, general secretary of the Municipality of Ibagué, Colombia, gave an introduction to the Assisted Pedalling Bicycle Sharing System project in the city of Ibagué, which promotes that the resident and circulating population in the centre of the city move about using shared pedalling bicycles.
Royee Álvarez, consultant and representative of the Municipality of San José, Costa Rica, presented the tramway project that they visualise in that city.
Finally, Mónica Solórzano, FLACMA's technical director and coordinator of the regional Community of Practice project, gave the conclusions of the roundtable, highlighting that the projects presented are specific actions undertaken by local governments that in some way address the big question "Who said this is impossible?", which served as a guideline for the work of PreCOP25 and invited all attendees to register and become part of the regional Community of Practice Sustainable Urban Mobility Platform in Latin America.
