Ambato strengthens its commitment to sustainable mobility

Ambato Ecuador joins the 42 cities and 11 countries that are members of the MobiliseYourCity Alliance to promote sustainable mobility

Sept 25, 2019 Ambato, Ecuador. - In order to reverse the trend of intensive vehicle use, greenhouse gas emissions and rapid motorisation, Ambato aims to change the city's mobility model and aim for sustainable urban mobility. For this it has joined the international MobiliseYourCity Alliance, in order to obtain methodological support and a global network for knowledge exchange on the subject.

In Ambato, the vehicle fleet is growing faster than the population (180 cars per 1000 inhabitants vs. the national average rate of 133 cars per 1000 inhabitants). That is why during the sectional elections campaign period in February 2019, the issue of sustainable mobility was a constant request in citizen dialogues, and it was one of the proposals made by today's mayor Javier Altamirano.

After assuming office, he sought to materialise that promise and ratify his political commitment to sustainable mobility by formally presenting his expression of interest in belonging to this Alliance. His application is based on the project “Updating of the Transport and Mobility Master Plan” in which Ambato has financial and technical support from the EUROCLIMA+ programme.

“Ambato no longer resists improvisation; the execution of road and transport works in the city must respond to a long-term planning model and cannot ignore the international commitments signed by the country to achieve sustainable urban development and climate change mitigation” were the words of Mayor Javier Altamirano on Wednesday 25 September, when he received the certificate of membership in the framework of activities organised for Ambato’s Urban Mobility Week.

Dorothea Kallenberger, head of the urban mobility component of EUROCLIMA+ in Ecuador, highlighted the fact that this membership does not imply any cost for Ambato, but it has many benefits: “It provides the city with a technical guide and personalised accompaniment for the development of its new Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan”.

Ambato is the first intermediate city in Ecuador to join MobiliseYourCity, and it will therefore aim to be a pioneer in the implementation of effective measures to put human beings at the centre of planning. In addition, it will seek to have a high impact on the formulation of the National Urban Mobility Policy that the central government is also developing with support from the EUROCLIMA+ programme.
