Sustainable mobility in COP24

EUROCLIMA+ is the EU flagship programme in support to Latin American countries’ efforts to achieve the Paris Agreement commitments.

EUROCLIMA+ in accion:

Promoting Sustainable Urban Mobility Together with Local Actors in Latin America

Latin America is strongly affected by climate change, even it only contributes to less than 10% of global greenhouse emissions. At the same time, Latin America is among the most urbanised regions in the world with already 80% of the population living in cities.

This will increase to 86% by 2050. Urban transport has been a sector showing a continued increase in greenhouse gas emissions, but with a good potential to decreasing them. Digitalisation, vehicle and ride sharing models as well as electric mobility are the topics that are yet to be developed on a larger scale.

To advance this process, it is necessary to work at different levels: generate an enabling environment at a national level (policies, regulation), promote vertical national-local articulation between actors (governance), strengthen capacities in local governments and share technology, industry and innovative experience, like the European one, among the Latin American countries. EUROCLIMA+ is the EU flagship programme in support to Latin American countries’ efforts to achieve the Paris Agreement commitments.

In this context, the programme coordinates and cooperates with other important initiatives such as the NDC Partnership. EUROCLIMA+ currently works in the implementation of 19 urban mobility projects with local and national authorities, promotes electric mobility in several countries and assists Latin American countries to facilitate national-local articulation for a better climate governance.

EUROCLIMA+ aligns its implementation of these projects with the MobiliseYourCity partnership. After a brief presentation of the current situation of urban mobility in Latin America and the perspectives of sustainable and electric mobility in the region, selected actions to advance towards sustainable mobility performed with Latin American national and local actors will be presented.
