Key actors met in Uruguay to jointly promote climate actions in mobility.
After successful years of supporting and implementing climate change adaptation and mitigation policies and measures, the Urban Mobility sector of the EUROCLIMA+ programme held its fourth meeting of partners and beneficiaries. Focused on showing the results and progress of the 19 projects and 6 actions, the meeting will allow reflection on the next steps to move towards sustainable urban mobility and accelerate its importance within the climate agenda for the region.
From 26 to 29 September, more than 30 governmental actors and decision-makers gathered in Montevideo, Uruguay, for the Fourth Meeting of Beneficiaries of the EUROCLIMA+ Urban Mobility programme. Under the concept "Let's move towards the implementation of sustainable mobility: looking to the future, learning from practice", the event provided a space for the exchange of experiences to think about the future and sustainability of the projects.
In addition, the next steps for advancing towards sustainable mobility in the region were analysed, considering the possible scalability of the initiatives, their transformation into public policies and their replication in other contexts. Through the EUROCLIMA+ programme, the European Union supports 19 projects and 6 actions on Urban Mobility implemented in 13 Latin American countries.
This includes the development of National Urban Mobility Policies and Programmes (NUMPs) and Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), with national and local planning instruments developed using the MobiliseYourCity methodology.
Through theoretical sessions, practical workshops and exchange visits, the meeting has allowed the identification of the contribution of sustainable urban mobility to the climate agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This included topics such as governance and strategic planning and mobility, alignment between NDCs and national/subnational plans, bankable project design, financing sources and models, active mobility, electromobility and gender. On this last topic, the fourth and final day focused on a space for networking among women working on EUROCLIMA+ projects, with the leadership of Women in Movement (WiM).
With the support of the Community of Practice "Sustainable Urban Mobility Platform in Latin America", this event has allowed the generation of synergies and the creation of networks that enable strategic progress and the exchange of experiences between networks.
