Through EUROCLIMA+, the Argentinean city is initiating a participatory process with key stakeholders to move towards sustainable mobility.
Córdoba, Argentina, 30 November 2021- Under the slogan "Challenges and opportunities for Sustainable Urban Mobility in Córdoba: towards a city for people and communities", on 25 November the 1st Greater Córdoba Forum was held, led by the Municipality of Córdoba, through the EUROCLIMA+ programme financed by the European Union (EU), implemented by the French Development Agency (AFD), in the framework of the formulation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan for Córdoba (SUMP Córdoba).
At the headquarters of the Faculty of Architecture, Urban Planning and Design of the National University of Córdoba, the public presentation of the start of the Córdoba SUMP 2021-2022 project was held and, within the framework of the Participatory Strategy that it envisages, a first meeting of representatives from different sectors of the city linked to the issue of urban mobility was held: public agents, civil society, academia, the private-business sector and citizens.
The 1st Greater Cordoba Forum began with the institutional presentation of the Cordoba SUMP project, which includes the Updating of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan and the formulation of Mobility Strategies in the Central Area (EMAC) for the city of Cordoba.
This is in synergy with MobiliseYourCity (MYC), a global climate initiative that supports integrated urban mobility planning to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in cities in developing and transition countries. Its methodology proposes a framework for effective and sustainable urban transport development, providing support to beneficiary partners in the preparation of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans - SUMPs.
Presentation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan for Córdoba
In the initial block, the institutional presentation of the Cordoba SUMP 2021-2022, for the Municipality of Cordoba, was given by of the Secretary of Urban Mobility Eng. Guillermo Mansilla, who opened the event celebrating the opportunity for the city of Cordoba to have technical teams to carry out the process of developing the SUMP and he announced initiatives that the Municipality is carrying out in terms of urban mobility.
The Director for Argentina of the French Development Agency, Mr. Mathieu Thenaisie, then spoke about the different supports provided by AFD to projects in the region, highlighting the possibility of financing and providing technical assistance for the formulation and implementation of the SUMP and its pilot project in Cordoba.
For the organisation Despacio, Architect Patricia Calderón, as Technical Coordinator of the Urban Mobility component of EUROCLIMA+ for AFD projects, gave an account of different SUMP experiences in the Region, and the technical and financial support of EUROCLIMA+, underscoring the importance of SUMPs in the reduction of emissions in the transport sector, of citizen participation and collaborative exchange between actors from different sectors to arrive at a Mobility Plan that is meaningful for the citizens of Córdoba.
Finally, on behalf of the French Consortium Transamo - DVDH, in charge of the formulation of the SUMP, Dr. Jorge Cabrera presented the objectives and stages of the Cordoba SUMP and gave an update on the urban mobility situation in the city.
The First Greater Cordoba Forum was attended by more than 80 people from different sectors of the city: educational institutions, health institutions, territorial organisations, intermediate organisations, companies from different sectors (transport, commerce), sports institutions, civil associations, as well as technical experts in the field, in addition to officials and staff from different areas of the municipal and provincial governments.
Collaborative workshops for sustainable mobility in Córdoba
After the official presentation, the participants were divided into working groups where, under a workshop dynamic, they worked and reflected collaboratively, identifying the challenges and opportunities presented by urban mobility in Córdoba today, to finally make proposals for action that could be incorporated into the updated SUMP.
The event was closed by the Secretary of Urban Mobility of the city, who thanked the citizens for their participation, stressing the importance of these spaces for the improvement of current public policies and the design of new policies that respond to the demands and needs of the population.
