In the project's completion stage, the Sustainable Mobility Board is formed, which will give continuity to the implementation of the Plan's actions.
26 October 2021, Antofagasta, Chile. - After two years of technical development, the project Antofagasta Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is entering its final stage, which is why two participatory closing workshops were held.
Held on 21 September and 21 October, the workshops brought together the Technical Roundtable, made up of public bodies, and the Social Roundtable, made up of civil society organisations. During this space, a general review of the work of both roundtables was carried out and the necessary adjustments were agreed upon so that the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) of Antofagasta faithfully reflects the will of both bodies.
Recently, this EUROCLIMA+ project selected and grouped the mobility measures that will be implemented in the Chilean city. In the final stage of pre-implementation and monitoring, monitoring, reporting, and validation mechanisms are established to rectify a policy that will govern actions for moving towards sustainable urban mobility.
Toward this end, synergies were generated and lessons learned were shared among the public institutions that make up the Antofagasta SUMP Technical Roundtable, as well as the Social Roundtable, an important pillar that ensures the participation of citizens and academia in decision-making on the future of mobility in Antofagasta.
Subsequently, the priority measures and actions for both roundtables were unified, in particular highlighting: "Intervention in sectors of the city with precarious settlements such as the highlands of Antofagasta", "Transport and mobility policy with a gender approach", "Interest in citizen participation in different measures and actions associated with the SUMP" and the "Incorporation of the Coexistence and Road Safety Education package, with 3 measures and new actions".
The event also served to announce the formalisation of the Regional Roundtable on Sustainable Mobility, which will give continuity to the Technical and Social Roundtables and will be led by the Regional Ministerial Secretariat of Housing and Urbanism. Made up of public, social, and private actors, this entity will provide continuity to the work carried out in the framework of the Antofagasta SUMP and will facilitate its implementation.
The closing workshops were supported by the consultancy Cityplanning S.A. and the Fundación Urbanismo Social, which have played an important role during the development of the Plan.
Following these workshops, the project continues to advance in its pre-implementation stage, which will seek to strengthen the governance of the plan and empower the institutions involved for its proper implementation. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2022.
The Antofagasta Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is part of the EUROCLIMA+ programme, funded by the European Union with technical assistance from the German Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ). Through analysis and workshops over the last two years, it has been built with the following vision:
“A city whose mobility system is based on the principles of sustainable urban development, that reduces the effects of climate change, that promotes equity and social justice in public space, that improves the habitability and quality of life of the inhabitants of Antofagasta through a city on a human scale, and that contributes to the economic diversification of the region”.
