Three teams start development of prototypes to solve challenges in Teresina's public transport system.
Teresina, Brazil, 8 June 2021. - In the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ project “Mobility Observatory: Blockchain Technology to improve data management for citizen participation in Public Transport of Teresina, Brazil”, three projects of the #moveteresina Open Innovation Challenge were selected to enter the proof-of-concept (prototyping) development phase.
The competition was implemented between 9 and 31 March 2021, during the open innovation phase of the pilot project. It was organised by the municipality of Teresina, the consulting firm SYSTRA-UNIFOR and the French Development Agency (AFD). During the period, ideas were developed using digital technologies to solve the seven challenges of public transport of the Brazilian city, identified during the Diagnosis and Problem Identification phase.
Teams selected from the Open Innovation Challenge #moveteresina
The first team selected, Jaegers, proposes to use data intelligence to provide public managers with valuable information on the quality of the public transport service through an interactive dashboard and a transparency observatory. The challenge they are addressing is #2 "Measuring indicators of quality and performance of the public transport system".
The second team selected is Prontuário do Busão. The project aims to create a digital solution, based on the collection of data from a system in App format, linked to a platform of strategic indicators and predictability, which will help reduce maintenance costs, increase fleet efficiency and prevent accidents or vehicle breakdowns. The challenge they address is #1 "Real-time solutions".
The third team selected is OpTIME, which aims to create a route planning system for public transport that considers the population and traffic variables of the city of Teresina in order to suggest new routes, intelligent use of cars, serving efficiently and with equity. The challenge they address is #4 "Optimisation of the public transport network".
Methodology of the competition
The three teams were selected from a total of 120 people divided into 21 teams from all over Brazil who participated in the Open Innovation Challenge. The methodology was based on Design Thinking workshops lasting one week each and the accompaniment of 53 mentors who were experts in technology, innovation and mobility.
In the first immersion and ideation workshop, the challenges of the city's public transport system identified in the diagnostic phase of the pilot project were presented. At the end of the first workshop, the Jury Commission, formed by the city of Teresina, together with the consulting firm, the AFD and the European Union, selected 11 teams that moved on to the next phase of ideation.
The second workshop focused on the definition of innovative solutions. At the end of this stage, the Jury Commission selected the teams to develop the prototype and implement the project in the city of Teresina.
These three teams are in the process of contracting for the development of the prototypes and have been allocated 10,000 euros per contract to develop the prototype from May until October 2021.
Open innovation prototypes that address Teresina's mobility challenges are expected to be developed by the fourth quarter of 2021 and can be replicated on a city-wide scale. This will contribute to the improvement of transport in the city and the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
