Under the framework of EUROCLIMA+, the process for the purchase, installation and commissioning of the public bicycle pilot project was begun.
Ibagué, Colombia, 7 June 2021.-- The Institute for Financing, Promotion and Development of Ibagué (INFIbagué) awarded the contract for the purchase, installation and implementation of the pilot bike-sharing system to be implemented in the city of Ibagué under the EUROCLIMA+ programme.
This includes the procurement of 69 bicycles, of which nine will be assisted pedalling bicycles, to be installed at six stations. The tender was awarded to the company UT Ibici for €193,300 euros (876 million Colombian pesos). The company will have six months to set up the public bicycle system, starting from the signing of the start-up agreement.
"We have taken another step towards sustainable mobility, we have awarded the process to implement a pilot public bike-sharing system, which will have 69 bicycles and six stations," said Infibagué manager Paola Arbeláez.
During the work process, the stations to be installed in different parts of the city will also be adapted and made easily accessible in order to encourage the daily use of this type of alternative means of transport.
At the beginning of April, INFIbagué opened the tender for the implementation of the Public Bicycle System. This project is funded by the European Union through the EUROCLIMA+ programme, for implementation by the German Agency for International Cooperation, GIZ.
This project is part of the Urban Mobility sector of EUROCLIMA+ and has a global amount of 500,000 euros. Its objective is to promote the mass use of bicycles as a transport alternative in Ibagué. To this end, the initiative includes strategic planning to ensure the sustainability of the bicycle system, a dissemination and communication plan, training for project staff, as well as testing and monitoring of results.
During the first phase of the project, technical, legal and financial studies were carried out for the implementation of the project. Mobility is the second most polluting sector in Ibagué, with 32% of total greenhouse gas emissions. According to studies carried out in 2018, only 2% of the population moves by bicycle.
In this regard, the public bicycle system will help to increase alternative travel in the city and thus promote the growth of sustainable, low-carbon mobility. The pilot project also aims to lay the groundwork for its replication in other regions of Colombia.
