The project "Articulating Global Agendas from the Local" carries out reforestation processes that benefit more than 14 families.
Armería, Colima, August 10, 2020. In July of this year, the municipality of Armería began a reforestation process with 4,000 trees, as an adaptation measure to climate change, an activity that is part of the project Articulating Global Agendas from the Local: Ecosystem-based Adaptation as a Catalyst for Municipal Actions to achieve global targets, implemented by Pronatura Mexico and the National Association of Municipal Environmental Bodies (ANAMMA) in Brazil, under the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ programme.
The project implements riparian corridors in areas adjacent to rivers, which connect terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems; allow for the conservation of the habitat of multiple species; and preserve ecosystem services. The corridors have plant cover that reduces vulnerability to the floods occurring in Armería as a result of climate change.
“The municipality of Armería, as well as the landowners of Cofradía de Juárez, consider that these adaptation actions are an example for the state of Colima, given that they allow for the care and maintenance of its healthy ecosystems; in addition to reducing vulnerability to climate change,” said Alejandra Tenorio, project coordinator.
This measure’s approach focuses on Ecosystem-Based Adaptation, the project's main line of action, which aims to integrate it into local planning to promote biodiversity conservation and disaster risk reduction, while also intensifying the mobilisation of the local population to face the adverse effects of climate change.
The actions are developed with the collaboration of the Municipality of Armería, the Institute for the Environment and Sustainable Development of the State of Colima, the Grupo México Foundation and the inhabitants of Armería.
More than 14 families in Armería will benefit directly from the reforestation processes |
The Cofradía de Juárez ejido (communal land) is one of the places that has benefited from the project. Actions are focused on the conservation and restoration of biodiversity, as well as on strengthening the technical capacities of the authorities and the population. In the near future, mezquite and guaje rojo trees will be reforested. These trees help maintain the natural landscape, prevent rivers from overflowing, improve agricultural soil, and provide quality wood and foods for local fauna. These plants were donated by the Grupo Mexico Foundation.
About the project
The project Articulating Global Agendas from the Local: Ecosystem-based Adaptation as a catalyst for municipal actions to achieve global targets works in seven priority sites in Mexico and Brazil where actions are implemented with a gender approach.
It also articulates global, national, and regional agendas with integrated actions for biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, adaptation, and disaster risk reduction. With this, the project contributes to the fulfilment of national and international goals in the fight against the effects of climate change through the exchange of experiences and implementation of adaptation measures.

About EUROCLIMA+
EUROCLIMA+ is a programme financed by the European Union and co-financed by the Federal Government of Germany through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), as well as by the Governments of France and Spain, to promote environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient development in 18 Latin American countries, particular for the benefit of the most vulnerable populations. The Programme is implemented under the synergistic work of seven agencies: the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the French Development Agency (AFD), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Expertise France (EF), the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP), the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), and UN Environment.
