Expertise France and GIZ, met with representatives of the European Union Delegation and Peru’s Ministry of the Environment on the morning of February 12.

Forests are vital to tackling problems such as poverty, food insecurity and climate change. Therefore, their sustainable management is extremely important for Latin American countries that have extensive forest areas and whose management needs to be strengthened.

With the aim of promoting innovative projects and initiatives to improve forest management in our region, EUROCLIMA+, a programme funded by the European Union, under the framework of its Forests, Biodiversity and Ecosystems component, will implement three binational projects in Peru, together with Costa Rica, Honduras and Bolivia, starting in 2019.

In order to continue sharing synergies with other projects, officials of this component’s two implementing agencies, Expertise France and GIZ, met with representatives of the European Union Delegation and Peru’s Ministry of the Environment on the morning of February 12.

During this meeting, Diego Mellado, Ambassador of the European Union in Peru, pointed out that Peru and the European Union have a strong commitment to combatting climate change... “which is why we believe that the best way to confront it is through the application and implementation of the Paris Agreement. Through political dialogue and cooperation projects, the EU and Peru are working together exchanging experiences and best practices, seeking solutions to this important challenge that we have in common,” he said.

The meeting included the participation of representatives of the project’s implementing agencies, which include the Association for Integral Research and Development (AIDER), the Bolivian Association for Research and Conservation of Andean-Amazonian Ecosystems (ACEAA), the Association for the Conservation of the Amazon Basin in Peru (ACCA), the PUR project and other local actors.
